School Pottery Classes

We offer calm, hands-on pottery classes for schools, centred on care, patience, and the quiet satisfaction of making with clay.

Our classes invite students to slow down, work with their hands, and experience clay as a responsive, forgiving material. Each session is guided, age-appropriate, and shaped by our long-standing practice as potters and teachers.

Suitable for primary and secondary students, our programs are held in the school.

Students are guided through the tactile process of working with clay, learning through doing rather than instruction alone.

Depending on age and format, sessions may include:

  • Hand-building techniques such as pinch, coil, and slab

  • Introduction to form, balance, and surface

  • Understanding clay as a natural material

  • Space for individual expression within a shared making environment

The focus is on process, attention, and care — not speed or perfection.

What Students Experience

Pottery naturally supports a wide range of learning outcomes without feeling ridged or overly structured.

Through working with clay, students develop:

  • Fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination

  • Focus, patience, and problem-solving

  • Confidence through completing a physical object

  • Creative thinking and personal decision-making

  • Respect for materials, tools, and shared space

Our studio is built around the belief that making by hand teaches patience, care, and respect for process.

Alongside our own ceramic practice, teaching is a vital part of our work. We value shared making and the way skills and knowledge are carried forward through hands-on experience.

Working with schools allows us to introduce students to clay in a way that feels generous, thoughtful, and lasting.

Helen has a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma of Teaching. We also have Working with Children Checks.
